What constitutes friendship? Well to my 8 year old daughter it would be anyone willing to play with her in the moment. Recently at a BBQ she met up with her "new best friend". She introduced herself and asked if she wanted to be friends, and they were off. They hung out all evening and played everywhere like they had grown up together. The evening ended and they have not met since.

In this shot, they were heading into the deep unknown of the hazel nut orchard, bravely facing (pretend) danger, bow, quiver and arrow in tow with tightly held hands...

Funny, having just gotten back from vacation, I noticed even myself chatting with total strangers, hanging out, walking together, then parting ways with no contact information or future plans. A part of me will always remember them and wonder what they are doing and where they are now... A part remains happy just having said hi in passing.

Oregon's Mustangs

I am feeling a bit nostalgic after having another short but very productive visit to the wild herds in South Eastern Oregon. One of the herds I visit is scheduled for gathering by the BLM soon, so this may have been my last opportunity to see them in the wild. It leaves me aching and curious as to the new lives they may lead soon.

I am thankful that I was able to make this visit, and that I have been able to share them with a handful of select friends and my family. I know they are there for anyone to go out and find and photograph, but it makes my heart sing that I was involved in introducing them to a few that may have not have sought them out on their own.

Something happens when you are able to see and interact with them on their terms out in their wild territories. I know we feel as if we become ambassadors to the herds we meet. Something in us wants to keep them a secret to insure their wild nature, and something wants to share them with everyone we meet, because they are so fantastic. I hope my photographs can bring them to you to enjoy, yet keep them discreetly tucked away safe where they belong. I have only followed them for 2 years now, and already I feel such a great sense of responsibility towards them. I can only immagine how others feel that have followed herds for decades, and watched and recorded their progress.

The temptation is always there to exploit them for our own profit. I was recently asked about doing a workshop, taking people out to them for a fee to photograph them. It breaks my heart to think about people tromping all over, desensitizing them to humans, and possibly even endangering their well being. Although they are on public lands, available for anyone to research and go out and find, the task is not that easy. Something in me likes to remember I worked very hard for these images, and wants to keep it that way. I know anyone who photographs the mustangs feels this way. I could go on forever about the pros and cons of Madeline Pickens, her heart is in the right place, but never overlook the fact that she wants to make her millions on them also.

I know I am not the first to find them, I have shown others, and we are not the last to be with them either. I hope they are around for future generations to seek out and enjoy as they are. I know that a few of the South Steens herd will escape capture and continue to thrive, I find myself wondering which ones, and secretly hoping for a select few not to show up in the pens as I have grown quite fond and attached to them. I hope for the rest that they go on and find fantastic new lives.

I was heart broken to see a dun overo stallion I have followed in very poor shape, completely skin and bones, and not doing well. With a gathering on the horizon, this aged stallion may have a huge change coming his way, and I fear if he evades capture, that he may not survive the winter. When I found him this spring, he was strong and healthy, I wonder what has happened.

Here are a handful of photos I was able to take this trip from two distinct areas. Many of them you may find in the pens at the Burn/Hines BLM horse corrals available for adoption this winter and spring.

Hi all, if you follow my facebook pages, you have seen these already. This week has been tough, my dear friend and fellow photographer Sibbea got news that her little sister Hannah was life flighted to Emanuel Hospital in the early hours Sunday. She came off her horse, which then fell on her, shattering her leg, fracturing her skull and breaking her colloquial bone in her ear in 3 places. She is only 14. After days of hanging on by a thread, she is showing improvement now finally but still not in the clear. Most likely she will be spending her birthday in the hospital and will have weeks, months if not years of physical therapy to completely recover.

These images were taken the first day after she was taken out of ICU and stabilized. Yes, they are graphic and unsettling. I have taken them with permission of her family, please say a little prayer for Hannah's complete recovery.

Rainy Days

Hi all, I am back up and running after a brief explosion in March and April. Yay!

So hey, days are slow this week, and I am loving the break, it was pouring rain yesterday and my daughter asked me to take some photos. I was ON it. So many times I hear "we have to cancel, it's going to rain" and so many times I have tried, too no end, to get clients to jump in with rain jackets and umbrellas and just GO with it, this is after all, OREGON... I even found myself wanting MORE rain, so it showed in the photos... (maybe pouring off the side of the umbrella, I thought about the garden hose... what would my neighbors think, ha ha ha, that crazy woman is out in the rain spraying her kid with the hose). Here's a few , shot right in front of our house on the street. I would probably clean up the tail lights of cars and stuff if I sent these to print.

Unwilling Subject

The light in my garden was exquisite just now, I grabbed my camera and child to go do an impromptu fun thing and she rebelled.... I have often preached, just go with it anyway to the parents of an unwilling child, and done so myself with my own and have come out with the best images ever, ones that I could have never gotten posed.

Well, as luck would have it, I got all of 30 seconds before she flipped out and ran off, but.... I got a stroke of luck in those seconds I think... One split second of complacency before the storm, enjoy....

Last night was the night. I got the call that the long awaited foaling was eminent. As luck would have it, my daughter was allowed to come along.

Hours ticked by, and the suspense grew, then finally, just about midnight the foaling monitor showed what we were waiting for. We crept out to the barn as the mare delivered. What a great Momma, I was snapping away while Mom and baby did their thing and Emily came into the stall to tell me (quite alarmed) that the "white" mare down the isle was laying down.... "white" mare was 38 days overdue, and the vet had been out this evening and said by next Tuesday probably. Someone went to check and we hear "she's FOALING!" So off to photograph number two for the night, a short half hour from the first. Awesome! You can't ask for more than that.

Both were healthy chestnut colts with stars and stripes, and white socks on a front leg! Sweet. almost twin-ish, and the Momma's are best friends, ok, as well as horses can be that is....

Mom's and babies were doing fine as we headed home. I hope to go back out in a couple of days to see them and take more images. Thanks Mary for letting me be a part of this! Stay tuned!

Sweet, I got my new iphone G3 today. I know many many people have had one for a long time, and some don't even like it because it doesn't do video, or read flash sites. I LOVE IT! And that's all that counts :) Hello, I own how many cameras, and video camera, 5 computers and, and, and, it's a PHONE first and foremost.... :P Big ole raspberries to those out in left field (All in fun I assure you)

It's fantastic to have my phone book and contacts at my finger tips again, I have survived on a go phone for several months waiting for it to be time for an upgrade after dropping my last phone. I didn't realize just how lost I had been.

Ah the Holidays are upon us! I love this time of year.

Recently I had the pleasure of sharing a bit of time with with the Alexander's. Such a fun and gorgeous family!... I always have such a great time working with families. (Even when my equipment isn't co-operating! akkk, that's another story...)

I hinted that a new look was coming. This morning www.cyndieplanckphotography.com went online! OK, I know it's a lot more to type in, so make sure to bookmark it please :). The old site will still be up for a while, and everything will connect eventually so I thank you for your patience in advance while we grow and update!

Cool and exciting features include:
Flash image shows, see more cool photos right away.
Better portfolio galleries.
Easy access to my scheduling calender!
Ask about availability right from the site!
Easy navigation, everything you need is right at your finger tips on the home page.
View your proofs and order right from the site (ok, so I am working on that happening very soon, but it's coming)

The only downfall is, flash can take a lot longer to load for those of you still on dial up, and with slower service providers. Never fear, a mirror html (non flash) site is coming, and the old site will be still be available, so it is your choice what you want to use.

So here is my dilemma, and I would very much appreciate it if you would respond.

How do you feel about music on websites? Should I add music, or stay without it?

As my shooting slows down in the fall, my marketing for next year is always hot on my mind.

In the background We are busy building a new cool website, a new look, new products for 2009 and much more. Nothing like a little early hype right?

One the things I intend to offer is a really high end gorgeous album to everyone. These are really cool, and will be worked into packages soon. Several templates will be available, including custom built ones by myself! Can you tell I'm excited?

"I Shoot People" Tour

LOTS of fun stuff! I went to the "I shoot people" tour presented by the Sallee's last night. Great fun, I highly recommend it to anyone. Of course it was directed a lot towards wedding photography, but..... as an artist, I am constantly pushed to think outside of my box. Sometimes this means taking things from other genres and applying them to say.... equine.......

I have some super cool great stuff I will be launching soon, stuff that you just DON'T see in equine photography much yet. And why not? It's just not done..... I did a senior session this morning, that turned into two, I love that! Katie brought her boyfriend, Chaz, along for a couple of shots and we did an entire shoot for him too. If I have time I am always up for anything, so this was right up my alley.

I realized looking though things today that poor Josh K didn't get much press, sometimes that happens as I get screaming busy, sorry Josh!

I just wanted to share a few more from this session, he came all the way out to Oregon from Wisconsin! W had so much fun, and I love to see how much returning clients have grown! A Rare Sunday Session.....

This family was so fun, we have been trying to hook up and schedule all summer and today was the day! With all this heat and bright sun, this morning we woke up with cloud cover. We had great light, even with the "deep south" humidity.

They were up for most anything, but I didn't get too wild, had to keep myself under control :)

Here's some sneak previews... Of course I took a ton of images as usual. I love when people are themselves, it really brings out that personal touch in the images. What fun!

Yesterday I had the pleasure of going out to shoot with Mary Cornelius and Sharon Fibelkorn. What fun, thanks for having Emily and I ladies, it was a blast! Mary has a great description on her blog about this statue we shot: Adventures of a Shuttermonkee.

Going home today

As our trip comes to an end, we reflect on how very fortunate we have been. Not only did we see many wild horses, we were able to approach and at times even wander in and around the herds for hours at a time. It's always hard to leave, but I already look forward to next time.

Here's some shots from last night.

It's pretty bad when my 7 yr old daughter starts to get bored walking among wild horses and begins to play with the grasshoppers. Much more fun I suppose! I turned around to see her showing Grampie and demanding a picture. Below are the shots my Dad was taking at the same time I shot these.

Back to the Steens

Well, after two days of searching everywhere in and around Burns, we went back south to the Steens. We found our first herd and hung out with them for over two hours, the next group was 2 young bachelors up by a water hole, and the third, was a complete accident. While turning around, we noticed a tiny flicker in the trees, turns out it was 17 horses! It is completely amazing how they are nearly invisible in the open desert.

I am wiped out, we spent nearly 5 hours out in the afternoon sun in 98 degree heat. I'd do it again in a heart beat I tell you!

Another LONG day....

200 miles covered on BLM and Nat'l Forest roads, and NO wild horses. Lots and lots of sign they were there, but the timing wasn't right I guess. I was however rewarded with great light and a herd of ranch horses alongside the road. You probably wouldn't know they weren't wild if I didn't tell you, but that would be cheating! It gave me some time to play with exposures and shooting right into the sun, here are a few of my favorites below.

By the way, I have a gallery showing in Seattle starting Aug 7th and running through the month. I just may add some of this trip into it, stop by and see if you can! I'll post more info when I get home, so watch for it.

Today's Spoils

Well after a long day scouting, I do have a funny story. After a week of hunting and stalking herds, and seeing them close, far and everywhere in between, we have come to learn you just see them when you do, where you do.

Well, this afternoon, we were out 100 miles into nowhere, literally, and came upon a herd after passing a ranch. They were on the BLM side, outside of the ranch fence. All the colors were right for the area. They were hot and placid, so we decided to stop. We carefully got out, and did our little "meet the wild horse" thing, and walked up pretty close. So far so good, they were tolerating us. We shot and shot, and crept in closer and closer.

I was thinking, these guys are really good, when I happened to look down and notice something. "Um Dad, we've been duped" I said as I noticed every one of them had shoes on.... :) NICE! We laughed and laughed at ourselves. SO I do have some great shots of some real nice ranch horses. Hmm, funny, in the excitement of spotting them, I never noticed saddle mark scars, and the big round rears and deep chests that are all tell tale signs of Quarterhorses. :)) Feeling stupid now, at least they didn't have bridle paths! About that time 2 of them walked up to me and demanded to be petted, sweet!

We did get to see some pelicans, who knew they were way out here, and other water birds, and antelope again. Here's some images of my "Not so wild" horses. I also added a couple sunset shots from last night at stinking water.

Here are a few more to show from the Steens herd since I have time to go through them a bit, we are not finding much up North out of Burns yet. We spent most of the day researching with BLM, reading maps, and scouting 140 miles off road in really open, rough, hot desert. So here are more Pintos until we we find them here :)
